Hi, I'm Ellie. I'm 29, and I'm a single mum to a two and a half year old girl who never stops moving.
In the summer of 2024, she had just started walking. It was our first proper summer together and I had no plan other than making the most of it. Parks, the garden, the beach when we could. Just us two, figuring it out.
I remember watching her toddle around the garden barefoot and thinking she looked so happy and so free. Then I'd put shoes on her and she'd either refuse to walk or kick them off within minutes. I didn't think much of it at first. I just thought that's what toddlers do.
But that summer stuck with me. I started paying attention to how she moved in shoes versus without them. I started reading about how toddlers' feet develop and why most shoes aren't really designed with that in mind. Not because I was planning to start a brand. Just because I was curious and I wanted to get it right for her.
I couldn't find what I was looking for. Everything was either too stiff, too heavy, or fell off after five minutes. So I started looking into whether I could make something myself. Something light enough that she wouldn't notice it, flexible enough that her feet could move naturally, and tough enough to handle everything a toddler throws at it.
That's how Kaloa started. Not with a business plan, just with the idea that summer shoes for little ones should be simple, comfortable, and actually designed for their feet.
